The Head of Culturdes, Dr. Antonio Miguel Nogués Pedregal, has edited the volume Culture and society in tourism contexts in the Tourism Social Science Series (vol. 17) edited by Jafar Jafari and published by Emerald.

Synopsis

This book strives to understand the social and cultural dynamics in Mediterranean tourism destinations through ethnographic examples and case studies from places including Greece, Spain, Morocco, Croatia, Lebanon, France, and Crete. Exploring themes such as globalization, cosmopolitanism, leisure mobilities, power, and late capitalism, this volume analyzes the blurring edges of tourism and migration, the role the former plays in the dialogical construction of cultural identities, or how the interconnection between each of the diverse residing sociocultural groups influences the relation with other groups. The work of several social scientists, from different interdisciplinary backgrounds, over numerous years is documented using multiple research techniques to observe cultures and societies as they occur in daily practices. This analysis discovers how tourism characterizes the daily lives of social groups living in tourists’ destinations and how it offers a distinctive sense of collective memories, thus unfolding cultures and societies in tourism contexts.

Artículo: “El cronotopo del turismo: espacios y ritmos”


El investigador Dr. Antonio Miguel Nogués ha publicado en el monográfico Antropología, Globalización y Prácticas Etnográficas de la Revista de Antropología Social, 21: 147-171, editada por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, el artículo El cronotopo del turismo: espacios y ritmos..

Resumen
De acuerdo con las previsiones de la Organización Mundial del Turismo – OMT en 2012 sobrepasaremos la cifra de mil millones de llegadas de turistas. Este complejo conjunto que por abreviar denominamos ‘turismo’ es una forma distintiva de utilizar el espacio (el territorio, el paisaje) y el tiempo (el ritmo, el suceder). Es también un agente globalizador de primer orden porque coadyuva a que la ‘globalización’ se extienda allí donde las nuevas tecnologías de la comunicación no alcanzan todavía. El concepto de ‘cronotopo’ de Bajtín nos sirve para caracterizar la manera en la que en contextos turísticos se combinan los elementos donde se concretan el espacio y el tiempo. Todo nos lleva a pensar que el Turismo es la creación más perfecta y sofi sticada del Capitalismo, por cuanto no sólo consume lugares y territorios, esculpe paisajes o perpetúa relaciones de dependencia sino que, produce sentidos y signifi cados, y convierte al lugar a través del espacio turístico actualizando los espacios y los ritmos de acuerdo con los principios defi nidos por el Mercado Global. En función de lo anterior se hacen consideraciones sobre la distintividad del quehacer etnográfi co en entornos turísticos.
